A Vision
That’s how it all started back in 1988 when Pat Josephson, then manager of the Assiniboine Community College Students’ Association, dreamt up a little event – an indoor beach volleyball tournament during the cold Manitoba winter. Sun of a Beach was born and organizers have never looked back!
What started out as a small local event has continued to grow and expand and now boasts a 96-team co-ed tournament (that’s approximately 700 players!) and a social attended by 2000+ party-goers. Both the tournament and the social continue to sell out every year!
Held in Brandon’s major event complex, the Keystone Centre, the beach volleyball tournament attracts players of various skill levels from the local community as well as from Winnipeg and other areas of Manitoba, from Saskatchewan and North Dakota. Individual players have travelled from as far away as British Columbia and even Florida to participate in this event. The popular Sun of a Beach social is Westman’s largest beach party and tickets for it are a hot item as the event approaches.
Planning an event of this magnitude is an exhausting task and requires countless hours of work from a core group of 14 organizing committee members, comprised of Student Council and SA staff members, plus another 50 volunteers, many of whom are college students and staff.
Our dedicated sponsors are also a big part of the events’ success. Many of them have been supporting the event since day one!
Proceeds from Sun of a Beach help support ACC Students’ Association programs and services for students.
